Dominican Volunteer Trip

Shooting video with DSLR
Sometimes it’s not easy to ask for help, especially if you are a 28 year old competitive male that has a history of trying to do everything himself. In this post, I am putting my instinct aside and am asking for a helping hand for those that can offer some assistance.

My wife, Kara, and I are heading to Yamasa, Dominican Republic for a week long volunteer trip to help those who cannot afford any type of medical treatment. We will be traveling down March 19th with a group of Audiologists and nurses who will be fitting hearing aids and providing medical treatment. This is the first time I personally have done anything like this, and I really don’t know what to expect.

I am planning on documenting the entire trip to see where this experience takes us. This is where I need help. I have some experience with shooting photographs with my Canon t2i DSLR but do not have a great amount of experience shooting video. I’ve put in my research but I am finding the more I dive into it the more accessories there are to make a professional quality video. Right now all I have is a very cheap tripod, the camera itself and a decent lens. If you can lend a follow focus, external mic, camera rig, or anything that you think can help me document this experience it would go a long ways.

I hope this post finds the right eyes and that you want to be a part of the journey. The people receiving the hearing aids and medical kits will surely make this worth while. If you have any questions about the trip or can help out in any way, please leave a comment or contact me.

Thank you so much for reading this post and if you don’t mind “liking” this to the right of the page it would help spread the word!

Kinek on TechCrunch

Kinek on TechCrunch

If you work for a start-up like I do there are a few goals that you aim for in the tech industry. Profitability, sustainability, competitive advantage, and being mentioned on TechCrunch. This past Friday, Sarah Perez wrote an article on Kinek and how our company has entered the mobile space with our new iPhone app. I was off that day, but when a co-worker texted me the simple line “Check out TechCrunch” I almost lost my mind. Needless to say my day off turned into a pretty busy work day for all the right reasons. I knew we were in contact with Sarah and we truly appreciate her writing the article, but just seeing it on the biggest tech blog in the world was a big day for us. More…

Live Empowered

live empoweredI was recently approached about a great cause that I wanted to share with everyone. November is National Family Domestic Violence Month as well as November 25th being the International Day to End Violence Against Women. The greater Saint John area is having a few events that support this great cause.

To raise awareness Live Empowered was born. It is being held at The Chang Yong Taekwondo College (278 Waterloo Street) on November 19th. The silent auction for Hestia House is from 10:00am-12:00pm and the Women’s Empowerment Session and Self Defence Course from 1:00pm-4:00pm. In addition, there will be numerous door prizes and light refreshments from Piece O’ Cake and Starbucks. There are over 50 silent auction items up for grabs including many great gift cards and items from some of Saint John’s most generous businesses. More…

Piece O Cake

Piece O Cake

I love small businesses that take risks and use innovative marketing alongside a great product. Piece O’ Cake is Saint John’s newest hot spot and has people in love with cupcakes all over again.

If you’ve visited Vancouver lately you would notice numerous Cupcake Girls locations throughout the city, and they are so popular that they even have their own TV show. I am not comparing the two businesses but merely pointing out that cupcake bakery’s can be successful by simply providing a great product and some smart marketing. More…

Saint John Men’s Basketball

Saint John City LeagueThe new Saint John City League website is up and running! You can find the website at www.sjcl.ca. I created the website with WordPress 3.0 and it will be updated weekly to ensure everyone is up-to-date with all the scores and standings. One of the greatest parts about using WordPress for a sports league website is its simplicity in updating content. Saint John Men’s Basketball has been a long tradition over the years and it was time for the league to get some recognition for its longevity and history. You can read about its 35+ year history and some information on who has won the league championships over the years. More…

Rogers VS Bell

Rogers text messages not getting to Bell or Telus customers

Many of us Canadians have problems with our wireless, cable, and internet providers. The two giants here in Canada are Rogers and Bell. Telus also holds a huge portion of the wireless market, especailly in Western Canada but this post is going to cover my personal wireless experience from hell.

To start, I want to say these views are solely my own and this post is not made to try to sway you to make any decisions based on my experience but to merely make you think twice before handing over your signature on a contract with Bell or Rogers. More…

Saint John Pro Basketball Team

Saint John MillRats

Saint John, New Brunswick is now host to a new professional basketball team currently named the Millrats. The name is under a vote contest for a name change on their Facebook Page, but the entire city is under a buzz of how much support the team will receive. Saint John is known for it’s blue collar hard working hockey fans. Can the new basketball squad live along side the popular Saint John Seadogs? I don’t mind being biased and I sure hope the team receives LOTS of support. One thing the team will have to show is an outstanding work ethic and never give up mentality. Saint Johners will support people who go out and fight for them every single night.  More…

Cross Border Shopping

Cross Border Shopping

The Canadian dollar has recently hit par again and just about everyone in Canada is taking advantage of the U.S. prices. Traditionally people will take a day trip down to their nearest U.S. city. Today we see a trend that is becoming more popular by the day. Online shopping is for the most part quite convenient and many Canadians are now taking that convenience to a whole new level. Canadians are finding a U.S. shipping address to ship thier online purchases to. If you don’t think that’s a brilliant idea wait until you hear how much these peoiple are paying for the exact same items you are.  These people are not only saving on the cost of the item but saving on shipping and brokerage fees. Some Canadians are saving in upwards of $1000 on building supplies, tool, tires, sports equipment and even clothes. More…
