The Food Program

Not to many times in life do we receive the opportunity to do something completely outside of our comfort area. My wife Kara and I went on a trip to Yamasa this past March with the Friends for Life organization. Kara spent her time fitting hearing aids and I filmed and helped document families that are sponsored in the food program. I created the video above to help gain awareness of the program and the need for basic necessities in Yamasa. Seeing the living conditions and how much the food program means to these people put a shock into me that definitely changed my perspective on things.

I appreciate the little things so much more. I find myself never wanting to waste anything, and the people in these communities showed me an unexpected passion for helping one another. Some people who owned very little were giving their food away to help others who had nothing. In one word, I would have to describe it as inspirational.

Please repost this video to your Facebook wall or Twitter feed or give it a “like” on Vimeo. Any way you can help spread the word about this program is helping these people. All of the people in the Dominican would simply say “Gracias”.

Photography apps for iOS

The hot topic for Photographers these days is #iphoneography. One of the best parts to taking photographs with the iPhone is the ability to download some apps for a few dollars and make the photo much more interesting. Last week I purchased 6 photography apps that I will review below and that I believe are worth while purchases for the pro or hobbyist photographer.

  1. iPhoto – If your a Mac owner you most likely know the beauty of iCloud. Apple announced iPhoto for iOS last week and I jumped at the chance to download the app for $4.99. Some people are complaining about the lack of features in the reviews but don’t let this fool you. It’s well worth the $5 and is amazing for a version 1 of an app. It’s syncs will iCloud perfectly, has the basic touch up features you would expect and the brush tool gives you control over really making the photograph look as interesting as you want it to be. Some features that will most likely come in a V2 is vignette/lighting controls and some more brushes.

If you own an iPhone 4 or 4S you know how powerful the censor is on your camera. It’s a quality censor and you can really take amazing photographs wherever you are with the convenience of reaching in your pocket and snapping a shot. It’s looked at as a fun thing to do for people who like to play with their phones but in reality its a pro photographers dream. Instead of limiting them to only taking photos when they have their 35mm or DSLR with them, they can now snap a shot whenever they see something they want to shoot. More…

Magic Lantern

Magic Lantern ReviewFor those photography lovers out there that also want to shoot amazing video with great sound, I introduce to you, Magic Lantern. A fellow photography friend, Colin Swift, and I have been researching Magic Lantern for quite some time but we were a bit worried about what it could potentially do to our camera. We both own the powerful prosumer Canon T2i/550D. Magic Lantern is essentially a lightweight piece of software that you install on your SD card that you put in your camera. It doesn’t replace your DSRL’s software, but instead runs over top of it. Brilliant. I recently took the leap of faith and installed Magic Lantern on my camera. This is what I found… More…

Make You Laugh

What makes you laugh? If you sit down and think about it, our imagination can run wild. Here are a few things that make me roll over laughing at times.

  1. I catch myself flipping through the channels and end up watching the India channel where they often play their countries top music videos. I don’t know who makes their videos but they are unique to say the least. They are always good for a laugh!

GoPro Videocamera

GoPro Hero

If you like action sports and capturing life’s exciting moments on video for the world or your family and friends to see, the GoPro is the camera of choice. This little compact videocamera can capture 1080p HD video footage at 30fps and the Hero 2, which just came out, has an even sharper lens and better focus capabilities than its original counterpart.

I personally purchased the GoPro for capturing video footage of my paintball bachelor party, which was one painful yet amazing experience. I also brought the camera on my honeymoon to Mexico and took some footage of my wife and I zip-lining and snorkelling. I was highly disappointed in the underwater capabilities as the videos online that show very crisp video is just not realistic at all. The original GoPro is not great under water, but it shoots at amazing quality in normal conditions. (see example below). More…

The Importance of Great Design

What is the difference between a user clicking on an ad or not? Great Design
What is the difference in looking professional or not? Great Design
What is the difference in becoming a premium product or service? Great Design
What catches the eye more than anything else on the web? Great Design

Let’s face it, most companies want to keep costs low, and be smart about where they spend their money. The problem is, in Atlantic Canada having a website is not used nearly as effectively as it should. In modern cities like Vancouver and Toronto websites are considered to be one of, if not they, most important marketing tools for their business. The web is where people are spending their time, and that’s the new staple for researching any type of product or service. Your website not only needs to be well designed, it needs to be found in search engines, and it needs to be connected to where people are talking like social media networks, such as Facebook and Twitter. Why I chose the t2i

t2i

Photography is my newest passion that I’ve dived into in the past 6 months. I purchased the t2i for 2 reasons. It first shoots high quality video in full 1080p HD, and secondly, it takes amazing pro looking photographs without the pro costs. Here is a bit more detailed info on the t2i if you’re looking at taking the leap into photography.

18 Megapixel camera: First of all, the megapixels is not the whole story. When you’re looking to buy a camera the megapixels should be the last thing you look at. I’ve seem 12 MP camera’s outshine 15 MP camera’s so you really need to do some research and look at example’s online of what your potential camera can take. Many photographers on Flickr and other photo sites list what camera and lens they were using when taking the photo. Canon and Nikon have always been known to be great quality camera’s because of their great censor’s and sturdy builds. More…
